Why Everyone Should Write a Six-Word Memoir

Smith Magazine: Home of the Six-Word Memoir is brilliant. (http://bit.ly/imKDsX).

Smith challenges people to creatively sum up their life story in six words and then share it with their online community. The results are often profound, provocative, or simply very funny.

Here are some examples:

“Decade of diapers: didn’t change jewelry.”
“middle class: above poverty. below dreams.
“Rollercoaster life means lots of vomit.”
“Couldn’t find needle. Burned down haystack.”

Here’s why everyone should write a six-word memoir.

The exercise will bring you into conversation with your soul about the arc and meaning of your life story. In addition, if you share your six-word memoir with a spouse or close friend(s), it will generate an incredibly meaningful conversation.

My challenge to you: Write a six-word memoir and post it here on my blog. At the end of the weekend, my panel of literary experts (my wife, teen-aged children, and Portuguese Water Dog who I swear reads books when we are not home) will choose one we think particularly rocks.

The winner gets a 25.00 iTunes gift card. Seriously.

I thought of two more I like a little better than the one I submitted yesterday…

I lived outside my own head…

Lived as fire, seasoned the world…( my hope is to truly live as salt and light,as Jesus told us to).

I think it’s cool that you respond to so many of the comments that are left on your blog! That takes a lot of time and it shows that you really try to be connected to the people who read what you write. I was really inspired by an interview of you that I watched the other day. I’m more committed than ever to just “show up”.

“Lived as fire, seasoned the world” that’s fantastic!

I enjoy responding to people, so I’m glad you enjoy hearing back.

    Cheers,

    Ian
